FDA announces new warning about antibiotic side effects

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics have made headlines this year for their dangerous side effects – we’ve detailed these effects many times on our site. But now the Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors and antibiotic users of a new side effect: the degradation of collagen in tendons.

What does this mean in laymen’s terms? In short, fluoroquinolone antibiotics can cause the tissue that makes up your tendons to weaken. This can cause serious injury, including the rupture of the Achilles tendons. For anyone who has ever competed as an athlete – or even watched sports before – they know how serious an injury like this is.

Rupturing tendons is just the latest in a long line of dangerous side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection, peripheral neuropathy and cardiac valvulopathy have all been associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotic use. These life-threatening side effects are often not mentioned to patients when doctors prescribe the drugs.

The FDA says they will update the fluoroquinolone antibiotic black box labels to include the degradation of collagen in tendons side effects. They also recommend that patients who use the drugs warn their doctor of any symptoms like muscle weakness, joint or tendon pain, pins and needles feelings or numbness in the arms and legs. Of course, fluoroquinolone antibiotics are important medications that can be incredibly helpful for some patients – but everyone using them deserves to know the risks associated with taking such medication. Considering that the Centers for Disease Control recently found that half of all prescribed antibiotics are unnecessary, there could be a lot of people putting their health at risk for no reason.
